Umpires

WANT TO UMPIRE?:

With hundreds of games each week, the Southwest London Baseball Association is continually looking for Umpiring talent. If you have experience playing, coaching or umpiring and wish to put your name into the certification program - or to umpire - please email the Umpire Coordinator, John Lethbridge at uicumpire@gmail.com

*** Remember to include your name, your age, phone # and years of experience ***

How many games can I expect to do?
-The number of games you do depends on how available you make yourself and how many are on staff. Umpires who make themselves available can expect to do an average of two to three games per week.

How do I know which days I am umpiring?
-Unlike other part-time jobs, you dictate which days you can work.  At the beginning of every month you send in a list of your game assignments for the month.  Confirm the games you are available and reply to the Umpire in Chief.

Are there any out of pocket expenses for Umpires?
-Southwest London Baseball pays for the majority of the expenses, chest protector, knee gaurds, and mask.  You pay for the brush and indicator (for balls and strikes), shirt and hat.  These items are generally around $60.  You also need to supply a pair of medium grey pants and casual black shoes.

What levels can I expect to do?
-You will start off with the lower levels (ie Rookie Ball).. Once you are carded as an OBA Umpire, you will be able to umpire higher level House League games, in addition to some Competitive.

Are girls and parents encouraged to umpire?
-Umpiring is open to all ages and gender.  Parents, sibling, and girls are encouraged to umpire as it is a good way to earn extra money, but also help the Southwest London Baseball Association, and enhance the playing experience of the children. Obviously, family member do not (as a general rule) umpire games in which their family members are participating.

Are there any problems caused by players, coaches or parents.
-The vast majority of games for Junior Umpires are House League games, where the focus is placed on the enjoyment of the players and fans, rather than extreme competition.  There can be problems, but you will receive training regarding this.  Any inappropriate conduct on the part of parents, players, spectators or coaches is dealt with by the SWLB Disciplinary Committee

Do I have to play baseball to umpire?
-No, as long as you understand the basics of the game and understand the rules for umpiring, you do not have to play baseball to be an umpire
.
